Can You Use An Air Purifier And A Humidifier Together?

Air purifiers and humidifiers can both be useful tools in managing indoor air quality. But, what happens if you use them together?

To understand how using purifiers and humidifiers together can impact your air quality, let’s first look at the differences between the two devices.

Are Humidifiers and Air Purifiers the Same?

While both devices are used to manage indoor air, air purifiers and humidifiers provide two very different functions.

Air purifiers:

How do air purifiers work?

Most air purifiers work by pulling air  through the device where pollutants are trapped or removed on a filter and clean air is emitted back into the room.

What are air purifiers used for?:

  • Remove pollutants from the air
  • Help air circulation
  • Manage airborne allergens like dust or pollen

Humidifiers:

How do humidifiers work?

There are 3 main types of humidifiers: evaporative, steam, and ultrasonic

Evaporative humidifiers use a fan to push air through a damp filter. When the air moves through, some of the wate evaporates, adding moisture to the air

Steam humidifiers work by simply boiling water and release steam into the air

Ultrasonic humidifiers use a diaphragm vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies to convert water into a cool mist of tiny droplets

What are humidifiers used for?

  • Add humidity to the air
  • Help air circulation
  • Aid in the prevention of dry skin and hair

Although they are typically two separate devices, there are some air purifiers that include a built-in humidifier.

Can I Use a Humidifier With an Air Purifier?

Now that you understand the different functions that the two devices provide, let’s talk about using them together.

We know that humidifiers put out moist air, but it’s also important to understand that air purifiers don’t filter out moisture, so the two devices don’t really have much effect on each other. Also, because air purifiers are able to operate under a wide range of humidity, moist air from the humidifier typically won’t damage the filters.

Another concern of using both devices may be high energy usage. Fortunately, both air purifiers and humidifiers generally don’t require much energy to run and should not increase your electric bill by much. Average monthly cost of using a humidifier varies by the type but is generally around $2-$8 for cool mist humidifiers. Air purifiers coast about $3-$8 a month to run.

Should You Use an Air Purifier and Humidifier at the Same Time?

Now that you know why it’s safe to use both an air purifier and a humidifier, let’s look at how to maximize the efficiency of both devices.

While air purifiers can and should be used all year round, humidifiers are best used when the air is dry. Using a humidifier when the air is already moist can contribute to mold growth.

Under the right conditions, air purifiers and humidifiers can be a powerful combination. For instance during allergy season air purifiers will remove pollutants such as pollen from the air, while humidifiers provide relief from nasal irritation and dryness. But not all purifiers are created equally. Check out our blog ‘Which Kind Of Purifier Is Best For People With Asthma?’ to see which purifier is best for asthma and allergy symptoms.

Can a Humidifier Affect Air Purifier Functions?

As you can see, humidifiers and air purifiers generally work well together to improve your indoor air quality. The one exception is that when a room is at high humidity (90% or above) using a humidifier may increase the likelihood of mold growing inside the air purifier’s filter. While a humidifier is generally not recommended when the conditions are already so humid, if you still want to use one, place your air purifier as far from the humidifier as possible.

Which type of air purifier is best to use in conjunction with a humidifier?

There are several different types of air purifiers on the market that use various technologies to remove pollutants.. Those that use a true HEPA filter are generally considered to be the safest and most effective.

How Tax is calculated

The amount of tax charged on your order depends on many factors including the following:

  • The identity of the seller
  • The type of item or service purchased
  • The time and location of fulfillment

The shipment or delivery address of your order
These factors can change between the time you place an order and when your shipment is complete. As a result, the tax calculated on your order may change. We display an “Estimated Tax” to be collected at Check Out when confirming an order. The amounts displayed as estimated tax may then be updated later when your order is finalized and completed.

The tax rate applied to your order will be the combined state and local rates of the address where your order is delivered to or fulfilled from. For example, if you live in a state that does not impose a sales tax, you may still see tax calculated on your order if shipped to another state. Moreover, the tax rates applied to your order may also be different for a variety of reasons, such as a shipment to a residential home versus a business address. Also, the total selling price of an item will generally include item-level shipping and handling charges, item level discounts, and gift wrapping charges. If applied at an order level, these charges, may be allocated to the individual items in an order.

If you are ordering from aeris and shipping to a country outside of the US, you may be charged the applicable country tax rate.
